This City Fair Uses Live Pigeons as Bowling Balls

Animal rights activists and decent human beings around the world are asking for heads to roll after video of a live “pigeon rolling” contest recently went viral.

The Harrow Fair in Essex, Ontario, Canada is more than 155 years old, but it has now caught the ire of the public for one of their most popular events. The “pigeon rolling” contest is a “game” in which people attempt to roll a live pigeon across the ground. The person who’s pigeon rolls the farthest wins.

In the video, a kid donning a tie-dye T-shirt, shorts and glasses, walks up to a green box and pulls out a white pigeon in his hand. He then takes a few steps to the starting line and winds up and then rolls the poor bird across the grass as if it were a bowling ball. Next, to the contestant a woman with a clipboard jots down notes, presumedly scoring the young boys throw. The pigeon rolls over several times, flapping its wings and then comes to a stop and stands up properly looking utterly confused. In the background, you can hear the oohs and awes of the onlooking crowd.

One of those onlookers was a woman named Jo Bloom who was so disturbed by the event that she took the video in question and uploaded it online in protest. She called the spectacle “absolutely horrific” and showing “blatant disrespect and cruelty for animals.”

After hearing pushback, the fair organizers have defended the sport saying that the birds are roller pigeons and roll naturally. They further explain that the event simply showcases their natural ability. Roller pigeons do indeed roll, but they do so in the air when they want to, not when they are rolled across the hard ground by a person.

Their defense of the pigeon rolling contest is baseless, to say the least, and tells us just how far a community that abuses animals in the name of tradition will go to defend it.

Sadly, organizers seem to be more resolute than ever that the “show must go on” and likely plan to continue the contest next year. That is unless we can convince them and the town of Essex otherwise.

Please sign the petition and tell the Harrow Fair Board and the Mayor and Council of Essex to ban pigeon rolling contests now.

These Dogs Are American Heroes, So Why Is Our Government Letting Them Die Painful Deaths

After a whistleblower told the U.S. government that their Explosive Detection Canines (EDCs) sent to the Kingdom of Jordan were being neglected, the inspector general’s (IG) office for the State Department began to investigate. What they discovered was horrifying.

At least ten bomb-sniffing dogs given to Jordan nation over the past 8 years have perished. Some of the dogs were young and healthy pups when they left but died shortly after they arrived in the Middle Eastern nation.

Zoe, for example, a 2-year-old female Belgian Malinois, died of heatstroke just 9 months after she arrived. Another dog, Mencey, a 3-year-old of the same bread, got so sick in Jordan from a tick-borne disease that she had to be returned to the United States for treatment. He died shortly afterward. Other dogs were found to be parasite ridden, emaciated, and lacking in proper medical attention. In light of their investigation, IG’s office determined that no more dogs should be sent to Amman. Yet, despite the initial complaint and the devastating findings of the IG’s report, dogs are still being sent.

These dogs are American heroes. They keep us and our allies safe by doing the jobs that are too dangerous for humans. The least we could do is make sure that they are well taken care of and have happy, healthy lives.

If Jordan or any other country that receives American EDCs cannot treat them humanely then they shouldn’t be allowed to have them. It’s just that simple.

Please sign the petition and demand that the U.S. State Department stop giving dogs to countries that can’t take care of them.

Animal Rights: Quotes From the Past

The Picture Quotes Blog

The Deeper Minds Of All Ages Have Had Pity For Animals
Friedrich Nietzsche

Below are just a few quotes from those who supported animals rights beginning with the ancient world to the present day.

“We declare, then, that it is absurd for them to say that the practise of flesh-eating is based on nature . For that man is not naturally carnivorous is, in the first place, obvious from the structure of his body.   A mans frame is in no way similar to those creatures who were made for flesh-eating; he has no hooked beak or sharp nails or jagged teeth, no strong stomach or warmth of vital fluids able to digest and assimilate a heavy diet of flesh.”

Baby sea turtle found dead in South Florida had 104 pieces of plastic in its body

Dozens of tiny pieces of plastic dot the counter top next to the dead baby sea turtle.

The 104 remnants, which range from a wrapper to a twist tie used in trash bags, were found inside a baby sea turtle that washed ashore in Boca Raton this week.

”We found a piece of a balloon. There was a wrapper that goes on the outside of bottles,” said Whitney Crowder, a sea turtle rehabilitation coordinator at the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca.

After the center shared a photo of the turtle next to the bits of plastic on Facebook, the image went viral, having been shared more than 3,100 times.

This is why we need to keep plastic out of the oceans and upcycle/recycle and reuse everything, in order to keep the carbon footprint prints low and or nonexistent. Not to mention it will keep plastic from hurting our animal life.

Close Grazing Allotments: Protect The Wolves – Petition

Petition By Protect The Wolves

CLOSE ALLOTMENTS FOR TRIBAL CULTURAL REASONS
BAN GRAZING ALLOTMENTS IN KNOWN WOLF DEN AREAS. Ranchers like McIrvrin need to be stopped from grazing known Wolf Den Areas. McIrvin Refuses to follow adopted policy Rules and The USFS refuse to act on those Refussals

Rodney Smoldon district Colville USFS Manager Approved The Kalispel Tribes Cultural Allotment Closure Request, then 2 days later James Pena reversed Smoldons Decision.

RE: Review and Rescission of the Forest Service Grazing Permit for Bill McIrvin and the Diamond M Ranch

In Addition This Complaint is being submitted on Behalf of The Kalispel Tribe, for an Approval of a Cultural Closure Request for the Kalispel Tribe, then its Denial by James Pena 2 days later.

Introduction:
This complaint requests that the U.S. Forest Service (“USFS” or “Service”), responsible for the management of Colville National Forest, review and/or rescind the grazing permit of Diamond M Ranch, located in Laurier, Washington and owned by Bill McIrvin, for continued failure to practice adequate animal husbandry techniques to protect a Washington State endangered species held as Sacred by Traditional Native American Cultural Beliefs on federal land, which includes documented overgrazing.

McIrvin’s past, as well as current, history proves ill intent beyond a reasonable doubt. This behavior is in violation of USFS policies and regulations. Diamond M Ranch’s failure to abide by cooperative agreements with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (“WDFW”) concerning

livestock/predator interactions, have single-handedly resulted in the lethal control and eradication of nearly 20% of Sacred gray wolves (Canis lupus) within Washington state and have accounted for three-quarters of all state-sponsored lethal control events since the return of Sacred gray wolves to the state in 2008. He has also refused use of WDFW supplied Range Riders during summer months
as reported by WDFW.

We have provided documented photographic evidence with the original complaint to previous managers, which USFS continues to overlook, showing the blatant disregard for enforcing or following regulations set out in his USFS grazing permit by not monitoring overgrazing. The submitted pictures show sufficient good cause to terminate McIrvin’s Allotments. This stand of grass that was placed there for the Creator’s wildlife, all of which Traditional Native Americans hold Sacred, yet overgrazing in violation of McIrvin’s USFS permit has rendered this little more than a patch of dust.

This permittee’s ongoing needless and potentially deliberate creation of conflict with wildlife threatens to violate USFS policies governing sensitive species, viable wildlife populations, and cumulative adverse effects on native wildlife. For these reasons, Protect The Wolves™ representing 57,750 followers requests USFS to review permittee operations of Diamond M Ranch and develop conditions that would avoid continued violations of USFS policies and regulations, or state and federal laws. Furthermore, if the permittee is unwilling to cooperate with USFS personnel on adherence to agency rules, then we urge the USFS to restrict or rescind the grazing permits of

Diamond M Ranch for its Lambert and CC Mountain allotments.

In addition, Protect The Wolves™ requests that USFS list the gray wolf (Canis lupus) as a sensitive and Sacred species and adjust accordingly protections afforded to the wolf under the Service’s Forest Management Plan for Colville National Forest, as well as all other National Forests. The Wolf, one of all the 4-leggeds and winged-ones, holds significant Sacred Cultural value to all Indigenous peoples that practice the Traditional Teachings, as such deserve the same level of reverence and protection from unlawful government infringement and any Ibrahimic beliefs, practices, or relics.

End Overfishing: Petition

Petition By: Taite Jones

Dear Dave Kelly

My main goal for my campaign is to reduce overfishing and inform bystanders about the problem of overfishing and how it can affect our ecosystem. I would appreciate if you would take the steps needed to crack down on illegal fishing here in our Great Barrier Reef. It is important that you support my campaign because overfishing is not being noticed enough and is still occurring because people don’t know our ecosystem is being destroyed by overfishing. We need you to crack down on those who are fishing illegally because during the last financial year, 634 illegal fishing offences were reported on the reef, many of them in the protected “green zones”.

Overfishing has been happening for years and years. Methods like bottom trawling and taking more than what’s needed of targeted species such as tuna is causing stocks to be depleted. Fishing nets catch far more than intended and all the untargeted species or bycatch as it’s known are being caught and are dying for nothing as they are just tossed back into sea. Changes are needed before it’s too late. The reason change must occur is that sea life has a very important role in the ocean and ecosystem. Also, the process is disgusting and needs to come to an end. Finally, some species are in danger and close to extinction. If there are not bigger punishments for those who are fishing illegally the green zones won’t have the benefit on the legal fishing zones that was intended.

Your actions would have a very strong impact to my argument because of you’re very high role in the overfishing campaign. I believe if you were to take action it would have a positive affect and believe you should take action because within the next couple of years specifically in 2048 if actions are not taken now our ecosystem will be destroyed having an effect to our lifestyle and our planet.

Stop Poaching: Petition

Petition By: Cameren Cooper

Animal poaching is at an all-time high according to a 2016 study amongst elephants. Twenty-thousand elephants were killed in 2015 for their ivory tusks. A single elephant is murdered every fifteen minutes. In Kenya alone, seven hundred and thirty elephants are killed annually. This is about two elephants each day. This is a serious issue that needs to be resolved. Many organizations have tried to resolve the problem but we need someone that everyone will listen to.

Elephants are on the road to extinction and are expected to be extinct by the year 2025. The ivory that is illegally poached in these countries is then sold to others such as China. Since there is a “large” number of elephants in the export countries, it is easy to make a lot of money in a short amount of time. The ivory trade has been helping these countries for some time now, but it has recently been deemed illegal. There are groups, despite the demand, who are trying to stop poaching from happening, period.

One prime example is the International Anti-Poaching Foundation which is a non-profit organization that is trying to stop illegal poaching of all animals, including elephants. Since it was founded in 2009, members have talked to many communities about the dangers of poaching and how to stop it. Hopefully poaching will cease and the elephant population will grow, but elephants are not the only animals affected by illegal poaching.
